My AS-Level results were surprisingly good: I must have had the top male exam results (or very near the top). My mathematics/further mathematics average was a healthy 96.5% which no one else at The Ashcombe School came close to. Being top boy is all that matters to me because girls demolish all the boys at A-Level and GCSE examinations; I try not to think about how well they did, a few girls got five A grades but no boys! It strikes me that boys and girls require different methods of teaching; I, as a boy, would prefer more practicals and applied lessons in mathematics and physics where we actually use knowledge. If there is a challenge I will rise to the occasion and learn everything required to overcome it; if it is simply an exam, more of an abstract concept, I simply don’t care very much.

I’m rather proud of my mathematics module results, hopefully they will shorten the road to the University of Cambridge.

Other subjects
A grade in both physics and general studies which I am very pleased with. Chemistry didn’t go well at all: I left revision till the day before and therefore got a C. Saying that, I hardly revised for any of my exams — don’t do this. General studies went really well, especially ‘Maths, Science and Technology’ in which I scored 100%; the other two general studies exams were essay based — haven’t done a timed essay for years! — and I graded 90% and 83%. In the words of my gamer friends “I owned those exams”. I think I will drop chemistry next year; the subject (OCR Salters) is badly organised and became less interesting towards the end of the year as the teaching became less applicable.
