Exercise tips for the beginner

I’ve been working out seriously for a few months now and want to share some of the biggest tips that I have picked up from research and chats with other gym-addicts. I am, of course, not a respectable authority on the subject but I will try to give good advice which will not harm or hinder progress.

At the beginning the main priority must be to simply increase the amount of muscle mass by performing compound exercises; these exercise the largest muscles of the body — designed simply to move a large amount of weight — but also place a strain on the minor muscles producing a well developed physique in a relatively short space of time. Using body-builder style isolation exercises is not as effective until each individual muscle is large/trained enough to have specific targets for improvement.

Recommended compound exercises

Chin-ups
Targets the back, biceps and forearm
Bench press
Targets the chest, triceps and shoulders
Clean and press
Targets most of the muscles in the body
Deadlift
Targets the lower back, buttocks, upper legs, trapezius and forearm

I believe that if you perform these exercises once a week for a number of sets each, the increase in strength will be immense compared to performing pure isolation exercises. I will write a more detailed explanation for each of these exercises as my knowledge progresses.
