I’ve just finished patching Endless War (Solar Empire) to work with register_globals=off. The host managed to lose nine-days of data practically ruining all of our games. I spent most of Monday fixing this. Why can’t hosts just offer reliable services? Hopefully Joshua will receive free hosting for a while because of the problems.
On the brighter side of life, SourceForge now offers free SVN services to hosted projects. I have put System Wars, the main ‘generic’ Solar Empire branch, into SVN so that there can be more collaboration between the developers. System Wars is really progressing at the moment, becoming more polished and efficient over time. I need to add all the features of Endless War before I use the new codebase in a live environment — we can’t annoy the players.
Hosting problems really re-emphasise that “If you want something done right, do it yourself”. Then only you is to blame.
