I have finally completed my UCAS and Cambridge application forms — only two weeks late! I decided to apply to Cambridge however just before I completed my application I changed my mind for a variety of reasons; a week later I reverted my decision and finally completed my application to Corpus Christi College. I’m known for my indecisiveness.
I wrote my Cambridge personal statement, and formatted a copy of my overall statement, using the LaTeX typesetting system with the assumption that my 10 pt Computer Modern font will give me an advantage over the thousands of Microsoft Word, ‘Times New Roman’ applicants — well I do have to use every way distinguishing myself.
My desire to go to Cambridge has waned ever since I visited Bath, Bristol and Liverpool. Bath, my current favourite, is a lovely vibrant city in which I could really imagine myself living for the next four years. I’m not very social person so clubbing, partying and drinking have never seduced me; I’m wondering at the moment whether studying at Liverpool will do wonders for my confidence and ability to communicate, in that regard it places higher above the other universities, or just impede my learning.
Wave-particle duality is one of the most fascinating theories in physics. John Gribbin’s ‘In Search of Schrödinger’s Cat’ sparked my interest in quantum mechanics by revealing answers to questions I have pondered throughout my A-level course. Reading articles from the internet resources Wikipedia, Wolfram MathWorld and The Free Information Society have improved my background knowledge of mathematics and physics. I learn obsessively using the internet and have been inspired by the biographies of Nikola Tesla, Isaac Newton, Gauss and Ramanujan.
I have helped create the browser-based strategy game Solar Empire which uses extensive mathematics for map generation and navigation. This has involved implementing and optimising geometry, random number generation and shortest-route algorithms in the programming languages PHP and C++. Computer science was a possible degree course however I find mathematics and physics far more interesting and rewarding.
The knowledge, friends and prestige gained from studying at Cambridge will open doors to advantageous career paths and academic positions. I would like to study, compete and socialise with the very best; I look forward to talking with friends at university who love their chosen subjects. Corpus Christi College is an obvious choice because it is fully residential and has earned a reputation for excellent social life and student happiness.
