My application has been checked by my referee and sent to UCAS. Now I have to await the replies from each university. The places for all the universities except Cambridge are sure to be unconditional or declined now that I have my A-level results. This removes the majority of stress that I experienced last year.
Even if I pass the interview at Cambridge I will probably have to take STEP in mathematics to provide proof that I am capable of achieving in the Mathematical Tripos. These examinations are difficult and it takes, for me at least, a large amount of luck to have questions that I can solve within the time limit.
The Cambridge course supplies exactly what I want from university by being the most demanding undergraduate mathematics course in the United Kingdom. However, it is worth considering the downside in accepting a conditional offer from Cambridge as my firm choice of university: the insurance choice may discriminate and that could be unacceptable, dependant on my confidence with STEP. I’ll think about that over the coming months.
