University updates and opinions

At last I have offers from all my university choices (excluding the University of Cambridge). The highest and therefore most difficult offers are AAB from the Universities of Bath, Warwick and York. The Universities of Liverpool and Bristol have offered me ABB which is a far easier target. All of the universities have advantages and disadvantages and I yet to make up my mind on which ones to consider. Except for Liverpool, all the universities are prestigious and I’ll enjoy going to any of them.

I’m anticipating my interview at the University of Cambridge on December 13. I have to go down the night before and wake up on the 13th at 8:30 a.m. to begin studying material for an exam in the afternoon. They do ask a lot of their applicants and to be honest I’m not particularly sure that Cambridge is that superior to some of the other universities I have applied to — is all this trouble worth it? I’m sure I’ll change my mind by the end of the 13th though!

I have visited all of the universities except for York, which I will view sometime during February, and to be perfectly honest the University of Warwick has the best campus and facilities. I don’t know if it will be best for me, however, as the closest city is Coventry which has to be one of the most hated towns I’ve ever heard of! Honestly one of the nicest comments I have found on the internet goes along the lines of “Coventry is Dire. Nights out are best described in one word: Commercial. You can get every commercial peice of Sh!t here, its sickening”. At least, if I went to the University of Warwick, I would have the student hot-spot Leamington Spa to enjoy.

Funnily enough, after every university open day I have been to I have become less certain on where I want to go. Every university has a different appeal and states that they are the best. Someone at the Bristol told me, even though they managed to achieve four A’s at A-level and had an offer from Cambridge, they chose Bristol over Cambridge because of the great atmosphere and social life. One of the most impressive feats the people at Bristol pulled off was feeding us pizza for lunch instead of the usual sandwich-crisp combination that most universities provide.

Meeting new people at the open days was really interesting and humbling. There was a polish student called Michal who blew me out of the water at mathematics. He is more committed to academic studies than me… Well he is applying for Trinity, Cambridge… Haha there is really no excuse. It is strange meeting someone more adept than me at the subjects in which I consistently come top in the school. I love it. To be honest the largest reason to go to Cambridge is the level of competition; this will cause me to improve exponentially and eventually become satisfied with my level of expertise.
